What, when, how....???

What plants do you recommend?

Right plant, right place is the important thing to remember. Think about the conditions - the soil, and the light levels and choose plants that thrive in those conditions.

When do I prune?

Different shrubs and trees need pruning at different times depending on when they flower. A general rule is prune when they have just finished flowering.

How often should I water?

Plants growing in pots and containers and newly planted plants are more reliant on correct watering, just stick your finger in the soil, if it's dry, water. Established plants benefit from watering in dry spells but water in larger quantities less often rather than little and often.

What compost should I use?

Peat free.

How do I get rid of persistent weeds?

  • Mow lawn regularly during the summer and keep edges neat. Regularly mulch and  hoe borders
  • In winter block out light using layers of cardboard and/or very thick mulch, in a few weeks area will be ready for planting
  • Fill borders with plants leaving no space for weeds to grow
  • Many weeds are beneficial to wildlife so try to have areas where you can take a more relaxed approach towards weeds
